Wenlan Zhang is a PhD researcher at the Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), University College London, and a part-time Research Assistant at the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science, University of Oxford.
Her research examines how digital and geospatial data represent people and places, and which populations may be systematically missed, particularly in rapidly urbanising and data-scarce settings. Her PhD, “Quantifying Digital Injustice: The Utility of Digital Footprint Data in the Global South,” develops computational and spatial approaches to identify, quantify and mitigate representation biases in emerging data sources.
Her broader research spans urban data science, population and mobility measurement, spatial inequality, and machine learning, with a particular interest in translating new forms of digital data into more equitable evidence for urban and development policy.
Her PhD is supervised by Dr. Chen Zhong, Prof. Mark Pelling, and Dr. Faith Taylor.
